GEORGE Y. GONZALEZ, Immediate Past Chairman

George Y. Gonzalez is a Partner with the law firm of Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, in the Corporate and Securities section and Latin American Business Group.  He practices general corporate law with an emphasis in mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, corporate matters, securities, private company business issues and international practice issues.

Mr. Gonzalez serves corporations that are publicly and privately held and other businesses in various industries.  He advises clients on their corporate, partnership or other limited liability structure and operations as well as general business matters for seasoned corporate clients in both the domestic and international context.  A representative sample of the international jurisdictions where he has negotiated combination, service agreements and other transactions include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and Venezuela.

Mr. Gonzalez has published or presented articles on subjects such as the intellectual property provisions of NAFTA and the manner in which a foreign corporation may list securities on a U. S. stock exchange through the use of American Depository Receipts. He is the author of “An Analysis of the Legal Implications of the Intellectual Property Provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement,” Harvard International Law Journal, Vol. 34, No. 2, Spring 1993, and “Algunos Aspectos de la Venta y Compra de Valores en los EEUU por Compañías del Extranjero,” presented in Monterrey, Mexico, at the Fourth Annual Houston-Monterrey Bar Exchange Conference held in June 1995.

While at Harvard Law School, Mr. Gonzalez served as executive editor of The Harvard International Law Journal.  While attending Rice University, he was president of Jones College and an alternate for Texas for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship.  After graduation from Rice University, Gonzalez studied on a year abroad program at the Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile as a Rotary International Scholar for Foreign Study.

In terms of community activities, Mr. Gonzalez is a member of the Board of directors of the Houston Hispanic Bar Association, Past Co-Chair of the HBA/Monterrey Lawyer Exchange Committee (Program/Brochure Committee), Past Director of the Mexican Cultural Institute of Houston and Supervisor Director of the World Trade Division of the Greater Houston Partnership.  He is also a member of the American Bar Association and the Houston Bar Association.

Mr. Gonzalez holds a B.A. from Rice University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.  He is licensed to practice law in the State of Texas. Mr. Gonzalez is fluent in Spanish.
