Held full responsibility for strategic planning, financial, operating, program management, technology, construction oversight and administrative leadership for a non-profit organization (5 managers, 20 directors, 400 employees, $8 million in assets and $15 million operating budget).  Programs focused on the areas of education for at-risk students at the high school level, adult literacy and social services at five locations across the State of Texas.

Notable Career Achievements with AAMA, Inc: 

  • Grew organization from only $2.0 million in revenues to over $15.0 million and rebuilt one of the most successful minority non-profits in the Southwest.  Launched new programs throughout Houston and Texas that successfully benefitted the community and attracted significant new funding sources, volunteers and donors to the agency.
  • Created new partnerships with such groups as Texas Children’s Hospital (new health clinic launched in January 2007) and the Houston Technology Center (youth project). 
  • Implemented cost-cutting measures, including consolidation of program services after state cut-backs.  Turned a difficult situation into significant surpluses in 2006 and 2007. 
  • Developed enhanced management reporting systems resulting in healthier cash position, enhanced credit rating and improved banking relationships.  Restructured bank debt using tax-exempt financing to reduce monthly payment obligations and provide financing for two separate buildings totaling $11.5 million. 
  • Re-tooled the Sanchez Charter High School into one of Texas’ most successful Charter schools.  Worked on a ten-year strategic plan for new schools with the Gates Foundation and Bridgespan consultants.  Served on the Commissioners Cabinet for the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
  • Raised total funding of over $20.0 million including new sources such as the Gates Foundation, Houston Endowment, Brown Foundation, Fondren Foundation, Shell Oil, El Paso Corp., Chase Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Bank of America and Wachovia Bank. 
  • Governmental Affairs - significant efforts in the 2007 Texas Legislative session. 
  • In 2002, President George W. Bush visited AAMA and noted its many successes with “at-risk” youth.  Yahoo Internet Magazine highlighted us in 2000 for our technology initiatives.  In 2004, was highlighted by Hispanic Business.  Previous articles have included the Wall Street Journal, Hispanic Magazine, the Houston Chronicle and the Dallas Morning News.
