Jose Gonzalez Sr., an immigrant tile worker-turned-restauranteur, raised his nine children to believe that with hard work and determination anything is possible in this country. The youngest of his brood, Laura Murillo, took that message to heart, becoming president and CEO of the largest Hispanic chamber of commerce in the country.

Murillo, who now has the ear of presidents and governors, said she seizes every opportunity to engage with elected leaders.

So when she took the stage Thursday at the Hilton Americas in Houston to introduce the new governor of Texas as the keynote speaker to a crowd of 1,500 business leaders, Murillo took the opportunity to mention that in-state college tuition for immigrants is a key issue for many in the audience.
